Dogtooth Log and Timber Products is the result of
a strong friendship between its three owners, Mike, Sean and Dave. Our love
for the outdoors and life in the mountains inspired us to start a business,
which combines our individual talents and skills to create unique products
for others who share our passions.
Mike and Dave are brothers who grew up in Truro, Nova
Scotia, and spent much of their childhood helping their father and grandfather
building and maintaining their family’s homes and cottages. They were
drawn to British Columbia to plant trees in the forests of northern BC in
order to pay for their university degrees and after many summers of working
in the bush, they settled in the breathtaking town of Golden to pursue their
love for mountain sports.
After finishing his bachelor’s degree, Dave moved
to Lake Louise to teach skiing and snowboarding, where he became close friends
with a snowboard instructor named Sean. Sean grew up in High River, Alberta
and shared the same passion for mountain living and working hard. The two
spent many nights scheming up ways to start a business that would allow
them to continue doing what they loved, and discovered the vast opportunities
that awaited hard workers in the growing town of Golden.
After a few years of working for contractors in the area,
the three friends saw a growing demand for custom log and timber work and
began acquiring the tools and skills they needed to go out on their own.
Mike’s vision to create Kicking Horse River Lodge triggered Sean and
Dave to decide how their skills could be best put to use. Sean’s love
of big timbers started him along his path to become a sawmill operator,
and moved to Prince George to hone his skill on the mill by cutting building
logs for the project. Dave’s creativity drew him toward the finishing
side of the project, and jumped at the chance to design and build the lodge’s
beds and railing systems.
With little more than the money in their pockets and a
thirst for learning, the three friends started Dogtooth Log and Timber Products,
cutting one timber order at a time, and building beds and railings for local
homeowners on the side while Mike continued managing the KHRL project.
A year and a half later, Dogtooth Log and Timber
Products has earned a good reputation in the town of Golden for supplying
top quality products at reasonable rates, and looks forward to designing
innovative home solutions in the area for years to come.
